History
India's monetary history runs from punch-marked coins in the Mahajanapada era around 600 BCE, through Mauryan standardization, Indo-Greek/Kushan/Gupta gold coinage, the Delhi Sultanate's silver tanka, the rupiya standard set by Sher Shah Suri in 1540 and continued by the Mughals, East India Company coinage unified in 1835, paper currency from 1861, the gold exchange standard from 1893, the Reserve Bank of India from 1935, independence and decimalisation in 1957, three demonetisation events (1946, 1978, 2016), to today's UPI/RuPay digital payment rails and the e-Rupee CBDC.
