History
Britain's monetary history runs from Celtic tribal coinage and Roman provincial currency, through a coinless gap after Rome's withdrawal, to the Anglo-Saxon silver penny and the origin of pound sterling under King Offa around 760. That system continued through hammered coinage, Tudor debasement, the founding of the Bank of England in 1694, the gold standard, decimalisation in 1971, a floating pound, and today's polymer banknotes and digital pound exploration.
